The research presented here is intended to complement current knowledge about "Syrian" migration between Lebanon and the United States in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. In particular, it focuses on transit cities in the journey to the US: two are French (Marseille and Le Havre) and one is American (New York). Using a comparative approach, the research examines the development of an economy of passage, the various ways immigrants were received in these cities, and the risks incurred by migrants during these transitory stays. More generally, this research explores how individuals and families build collective knowledge in the face of such risks
